How many times have you heard someone tell you “don’t sweat the small stuff”? While most of the time that is absolutely good advice, when it comes to insurance and making sure you are covered – it is the wrong advice. I wanted to share some misconceptions about different things I have seen in my career. I hope this helps you slow down and challenge yourself and your insurance agent to ensure you are properly covered.
Overwhelming Lease Agreements
Picture this – you finally find that perfect apartment or office space you’ve been searching for. You contact the leasing agent and tour it and decide it is the one. You sign the paperwork in record speed because you are so excited to finally move in and start the next chapter of your life. Did you slow down and read the details of your lease agreement? Do you know what your lease agreement covers and doesn’t cover?
I assume the above situation has happened to every single one of us. Lease agreements are not easy to read and understand and it almost feels intentional. At Agent M, when we see a new rental client or new business client come through we always ask for the lease agreement so we can ensure we write the best possible policy for that individual case. Insurance is not one size fits all. Please slow down after you review it on your own and ask your insurance agent to review it. Insurance Costs
This is going to sound like a sales pitch, but please bear with me. Premium costs are the first thing virtually every client asks me about. I understand the importance of making sure insurance is affordable, but I like to slow things down and help everyone look ahead. If you do not have proper coverage or very basic coverage and a loss happens are you going to be able to afford your deductible? Are you going to call me upset because you have a high deductible and also find out you weren’t covered properly or are you going to call me thankful that even though paying extra every month was worth it because during this stressful time I get to hand you a check and give you a hug because you are fully covered and do not have to pay a penny for the loss? Hugs and checks are always more fun! Call your agent and review your coverage to make sure your policy fits all of your detailed needs. We are also here to help review it with you if you would like a fresh set of eyes.
Umbrellas
They do not just protect you from rain. Umbrella policies can and have literally saved families and small businesses from catastrophic loss. Think of it as a literal umbrella around you, your loved ones and your business. It will catch you if there are gaps in your homeowners, renters, auto or small business policies. Work From Home
For some of us, working from home has been a blessing. As more and more large companies transition to some sort of hybrid or full work from home operating models, small businesses and personally owned businesses are having to make these changes too. Do you know if you are covered while you work from home? Most standard issued homeowners policies DO NOT cover you while operating a business out of your home. Life Insurance
The ever sensitive topic. Life insurance is designed to provide financial relief and stability in the face of unimaginable loss. It is also the one insurance policy so many people don’t think they need. We also get “I am young and healthy – I don’t need it yet”. This misconception is so scary as an insurance agent. Protecting your dependents, or if you don’t have any, or assigned beneficiaries in the event of truly horrific and unimaginable loss is something everyone should consider.
